Draft Care & Support Bill
Following a three year review, the Law Commission concluded that existing care and support legislation was outdated and confusing. It said that the law makes it difficult for people who need care and support (and carers), to know what they are entitled to and for the Council to understand their responsibilities.
The Government subsequently published “Caring for Our Future: Reforming Care and Support” (White Paper, July 2012) setting out a long term plan to reform care and support.
The Government hopes to promote people’s well-being by enabling them to prevent and postpone the need for care and support and to take part in education, employment and other opportunities to realise their potential.
The draft Bill takes forward the recommendations of the Law Commission report on adult social care and over the next few months, the Government will work with organisations, take feedback from the public and propose a way forward to take to Parliament.
